“You know, I got a fridge and microwave oven in the big-rig.” He cleared the phlegm from his throat, scratched the salt and pepper stubble on his neck. “Bought a NuWave Cooktop last month. I can make eggs and bacon whenever I want.”
“Hmm.” The waitress pressed her knuckles against her hip as she poured the coffee into the mug in front of him. “So why you here then?” she asked, popping her chewing gum.
He scooped up the mug, inhaled the rising steam. “You fill the filter with two cups? I like my coffee dark black, strong. Gotta long drive ahead of me.”
She nodded.
He gulped the coffee down in two swallows, pounded his chest to ease the warm liquid down and wake up the rest of his body. “Ahhh! That’s the spot!” He slammed the mug on the table. “Fill her up!”
With a half smirk the waitress poured the rest of the coffee into his mug.
“To answer your question, I come for the hospitality. It gets lonely driving on that highway all day.”
“I bet.” She wiped her hands on her apron, picked up his empty plate. “Can I get you anything else?”
“An encore. Extra crispy bacon. Cheesy grits. Jelly toast.” He ran his tongue across his bottom lip.
“You got it, sweetheart.”

It’s been so long since I’ve written a post for Sunday Photo Fiction! Feels good to be back! 😉 SPF is a weekly writing challenge where a photo is used as a prompt for a piece of fiction using around 200 words.

In so few words, you painted the scene as if it were before me. Very realistic!

Welcome back Nortina. I think that’s the crux of a big-riggers life. Yes, they have a mobile home in the back, but the company is non-existent.

Great job getting the feel of the scene across. I especially liked the bit where he pounds his chest to help the hot liquid go down — such a realistic detail!

Cute story Nortina. Seems you got the truck driver down pat. Makes me wonder what the poor waitress thinks of him. LOL!!
