Back in January, I posted Want to Start an Online Lit Mag? Do Your Research! to vent my frustration with three literary magazines that seemingly disappeared off the map after I had submitted them my hard work in poetry. Well today I have an update on one of those magazines.
If and Only If: a journal of body image and eating disorders finally published its Fall 2014 issue last month. Yep, you read that right, its inaugural issue was a whole three months late (assuming the original release date was November 2014). What was their explanation for being so late? They were overwhelmed with the number of submissions they received, and wanted to give each piece ample consideration. That’s understandable.
However, what is not understandable is the fact that to this day, I have not received a response to my submission, nor have I received a response to my inquires regarding my submission. Jesus Christ! Is this another one of those magazines that don’t send out rejection letters?! If this is how you want to start your business, good luck finding more writers and artists willing to contribute. I noticed you haven’t bothered to update your website either. The only difference is the addition of issue one, which, after reading, is how I learned that my poems were not accepted.
Very unprofessional in my book, but hey, what do I know? I’m just an overly sensitive writer.
By the way, if you’re curious, here’s the link to If and Only If ‘s first issue. There are some great pieces in there. I just hope they get the deserved recognition because I doubt that anyone else has seen them other than the editors, myself, and the contributors (assuming they even received an acceptance response.)
