Sunday Morning Word: “Kings and Queens”

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside the body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 (NIV)

Good Sunday Morning, Kings and Queens! I have another brilliant spoken word poem from Mariah Ivey entitled “Kings and Queens,” but before we get to that, let’s talk about the chosen Bible verse for this Sunday.

When a girl reaches the age of puberty and begins to notice changes in her body, and of course discovers boys, her parents, or guardians, or people in authoritative positions will tell her that her body is a temple, that her virginity should be honored. Don’t just give it away to the first boy who says you’re pretty or tells you he loves you, they’ll say. Boys are temporary, save yourself for the one who will stay forever. This is great advice and I plan to tell my future daughter the same thing, but I will also tell my son because his body is a temple also.

We have to realize that boys are not the enemy. This isn’t battle of the sexes, a series of challenges to see who can out wit the other. How can boys become men who are heads of households when all their lives, they’re trained to be dogs, and girls are trained to avoid their trickery and schemes? The last time I read the Bible, I thought those things came from the devil (Ephesians 6:11).  Proverbs 22:6 says to “train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” It’s time we start training children to be Kings and Queens.

When Jesus died, “the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” (Matthew 27:51), which signified Jesus dying for our sins. No longer do we have to burn sin offerings. No longer are priests the only ones allowed to pass beyond the veil to enter God’s presence. Because of Jesus’s sacrifice, God’s Holy Spirit resides within us; our bodies are now Holy temples. So when you masturbate, have sex outside of marriage, commit homosexual acts, etc.. you are desecrating your Holy temple.

We weren’t created to just live our lives however we wanted to. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers, all things were created by him and for him” (Colossians 1:16). Life isn’t about turning up every weekend, or having sex with everything that moves. It’s about giving glory and honor to God that you may one day hear the words, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.”

And for those of you who have sinned against your own body, for those boys who were trained to do so, for those girls who fell for that manipulation, it is not too late. When you accepted Jesus Christ into your life, all of that is washed away and forgotten. “[Y]ou were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11). Now it is time to turn your life around and honor your Holy temple, King, Queen.
